Indianapolis 500 Betting Odds for 2020

Traditionally, the field is close and even the prices for the favorites are relatively high. That opens the door to some good Indy 500 betting opportunities and strategies. You can easily combine two or even three drivers instead of backing only one which is usually the smart choice.

The most natural thing would be to start with the favorites and then go through some sleepers, before sharing my Indy 500 predictions. Let’s take a look at the drivers that are expected to fight for the crown.

Indy 500 Vegas Odds

The big favorite for the 2020 Indy 500 is Scott Dixon. The New Zealander has won the IndyCar Series Championship five times and already has registered three wins in the current season. Dixon will start from second place and certainly has the pace to challenge for the title.

Let’s not forget that he’s won the Indy 500 back in 2008 and would love to do it again. Dixon has the experience, the mentality of a true champion, and a fast car. That’s a deadly combination and he certainly is one of the guys to consider when betting on the Indianapolis 500.

Winning the Indy 500 as a rookie is a true sign of talent and Alexander Rossi is one of the few drivers that have achieved that feat. He finished at the top in 2016 and loves the event. He will start from the ninth position after a relatively average performance in the qualifiers, but it’s a long race.

Rossi’s part of the Andretti Autosport, so he has the car to compete. On the negative side, the American is having a rather mediocre season by his standards so far and that’s a bit of a concern.

Ryan Hunter-Reay is another former Indy 500 winner that will be eager to repeat his best performance and lift the trophy. He finished fifth in the qualifiers which was enough for a place on the second row. A decent position for anyone in an Andretti Autosport car.

And yet, Hunter-Reay has been far from his best in the past year or so. It would be hard to expect him to win the race in such a competitive field if he doesn’t achieve peak performance.

The big news from the qualifiers is that a member of the Andretti family will start from the pole position! Marco Andretti will try to match the achievement of his grandfather who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969.

It would be a remarkable story and we know that the latest member of one of the most famous families in racing is a capable driver. He also has a strong car and the pedigree of a champion, so Andretti certainly is in the mix.

Indianapolis 500 Sleepers to Consider

There are plenty of other skilled drivers that have a shot at winning the Indianapolis 500. We’ve seen all sorts of surprises in the past and some of the odds are really juicy. That’s why I’ve selected several names that are considered sleepers for Indy 500 this year, but they still have a chance.

Any guy that has won the Indy 500 as soon as 2017 and starts from the front row considers a mention here! Takuma Sato is a dangerous driver with loads of experience. His best days might be in the past, but the Japanese love racing in Indianapolis.

He had an excellent qualifying session and he looks ready to fight for the title. It might be a long shot, but you can easily get a price of +1500 or higher for Sato to lift the trophy.

The 2019 IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden certainly would’ve been the favorite of many people if it wasn’t for his relatively poor qualifying session. The guy has 15 wins in the series since his debut in 2012 and certainly has what it takes to challenge at the Indy 500.

He starts from the 13^th position which is not the end of the world if you consider that there will be 200 laps before the race is over. Newgarden will be desperate to add an Indianapolis 500 title to his list of accomplishments and the pressure will be off after the mediocre qualifier. That’s a dangerous combination and I would certainly be watching him.

I believe that last year’s winner deserves at least an honorable mention. Simon Pagenaud has been solid in 2020, but he will start the Indy 500 from row 9 after finishing 25^th in the qualifying session. That’s a mountain to climb for the champion.

Betting Odds For Indy 500

And yet, this is the man who took the ultimate prize of the IndyCar Series home in 2019 and I expect a strong drive for him.

My Top Betting Picks for the 2020 Indy 500

Since the odds allow it, I believe that the best approach would be to combine two Indy 500 betting picks: one of the favorites and one of the most likely sleepers. The pole position of Marco Andretti and his strong car certainly make him a good choice.

Many believe that the pressure that comes with his family name might be a problem, but I’m not so sure. The best drivers in the world are born to perform under pressure and it might even be an advantage.

That’s why he’s one of my two choices and the other one is Takuma Sato. The Japanese won the Indy 500 just three years ago and starts from the front row. Add the insane price for him to lift the trophy and the value is obvious.
