Deontay Wilder and Gerald Washington fight Saturday at the Legacy Arena for the WBC World heavyweight title.

Deontay Wilder enters this fight with a 37-0 record that includes 36 knockouts. This will be Wilder’s sixth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a July win over Chris Arreola. Wilder continues to do what he’s done since turning pro in 2008, which is use his combination of power and athleticism to produce knockouts at a high level. Wilder is a massive boxer at 6’7” with an 83 inch reach and simply wears down his opponent over the course of 12 rounds. To express just how dominant Wilder can be, his first 32 fights were decided in the fourth round or earlier. Wilder will be defending his belt for the fifth straight time, but some do question the lack of competition he’s gone up against recently. This will be Wilder’s ninth fight in Alabama, his birthplace.

Gerald Washington enters this fight with a 18-0-1 record that includes 12 knockouts. Washington has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a July win over Ray Austin. Washington will have his first title shot at 34 years old and less than five years since turning pro back in 2012. Washington is a freeswinger who packs a strong right hand and can be rather wild at times. Washington is also a big boxer at 6’6” with an 82 inch reach and could be dangerous if he’s able to land some of his shots early. This is a clear show and prove fight for Washington, as this is head and shoulders his toughest opponent of his young career. This will be Washington’s second fight in Alabama.

Washington matches up well with Wilder size wise, but that’s about it. Washington is slow, lacks defense and has very little technique. He’s more of a free swinger who is just super aggressive and is able to bully opponents who aren’t skilled or are past their prime. Along with Anthony Joshua, Wilder is the cream of the crop in the heavyweight division and has great skills to go along with his punching power. Washington is in over his head here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he tastes the canvas rather early in this bout. This fight shouldn't be close.

Randy’s PickDeontay Wilder

The pick in this article is the opinion of the writer, not a Sports Chat Place site consensus.

Top boxing heavyweights Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury meet in a rematch Saturday evening, Feb. 22, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It should be one of the best boxing matchups in quite some time with Wilder’s WBC and Fury’s lineal heavyweight championships on the line.

Wilder and Fury last met Dec. 1, 2018, with the fight ending in a controversial split draw.

It’s rare to see such a marquee matchup with no favorite, but here we are.
